Keurbooms River Ferries offer daily Guided Ferry Trips and Hiring of self drive motor boats.

The Keurbooms River Nature Reserve is situated about 8km beyond Plettenberg Bay on the N2 national road towards Nature’s Valley and 35km east of Knysna, along the Garden Route. The Keurbooms Estuary is one of the most beautiful examples of an estuary along the coast. The headwaters of the Keurbooms River come from the Langkloof, north of the main Tsitsikamma mountain range. The Keurbooms River Flows for a distance of 60km, whereby 12km is navigable by boat and is made up of a tidal flow. The Keurbooms River Nature Reserve stretches over a distance of 740ha.
The reserve is named after the Western Keurboom (Virgilia oroboides) or choice tree. It has brown-grey, smooth bark and leaves with small leaflets. Sprays of pink-mauve flowers change are seen from August to September, and also between December and January. It grows in the coastal forest edges.

  • Our qualified skippers and guides will point out and identify the rich diversity of bird life occurring along the river, the ‘nursery’ areas for many fish species, the specific habitats of the land mammals, and the intricate workings of the indigenous forest.
  • Once our 5km destination has been reached, we stop on a natural formed river beach where you are able to explore the forest up close by strolling through pristine canopies of towering Yellowwoods and other indigenous trees, where after you can relax on a soft sand beach touched by tranquil amber waters in which you can refresh yourself before our return to civilization.
  • Other noteworthy trees to be seen in the forest is the Cape beech, giant stinkwoods and Outeniqua yellowwoods, as well as ironwoods….Other plants include agapanthus, arum lilies, bracken, various fynbos species like pelargoniums ….
  • Common mammals that may be spotted include the bushpig, dassie, caracal. genet, baboon, vervet monkey, blue duiker, bushbuck, grysbok, leopard, mongoose and the Cape clawless otter.
  • Forest, fynbos, mountain and river bird species are often seen. Most notably are the Knysna lourie, malachite and giant kingfisher, Narina Trogan fish eagle, kelp gulls, white-breasted cormorant, African darter, reed cormorant Egyptian goose, yellow-billed duck, little grebe, hamerkop, black-headed oriole, Cape batis, Knysna woodpecker and various sunbirds.

Self Drive Motor Boats:
Available Per Hour from: 08h30 – 16h00 (min per 2 hrs)
Morning Half day: 08h00 – 12h00
Afternoon half day: 12h30 – 16:30
Special arrangements can be made according to tides and fishing requests.

Rates

Guided Ferry Cruise:
R120.00 per Adult
R60.00 per Children (12 years under)
R 0.00 per children (0 – 3 years)

Self Drive Motor Boats:
R95.00 per hour (minimum 2 hrs rental)
Half day and full day rates also available
Part of the proceeds go towards the Keurbooms River Conservation projects.

Directions:
The Keurbooms River Ferries depart 6km from Plettenberg Bay, travelling towards Port Elizabeth on the N2.
Directly as you cross the Keurbooms River Bridge you will turn to the left at the sign, “FERRIES:. The road will bring you back under the bridge into the parking area.
Parking area is accessible to all coaches.
